How to powernap

On my last post, I wrote about how to use a powernap. It can solve your problems, help you handle big problems. But the question which rises is of course: How to powernap. I’ve been testing this a lot (because I like naps) and I think I’ve found the perfect way.How to powernap

  • Feeling tired? You are going to consider taking a powernap. Well thought! You will feel more awake, sleepiness is in the past with a powernap!
  • Grab a cup of coffee. Before you are going to nap. Drink a cup of coffee. This is not what your mom told (no coffee after 9pm), but you don’t need a long sleep now. Only a short nap. The caffeine will start to work after around 20 minutes, the right amount of sleep you need when you powernap! So when you are asleep, the coffee will start to work and you wake up after 20 minutes.
  • Set your alarm 30 minutes ahead. You won’t fall asleep instantly, so you need a little bit of time to sleep.
  • Drink the coffee.
  • Sleep. The most obvious step. Get into bed, but don’t undress! Keep your clothes on, it will make getting up easier. Close your curtains, turn of the light and get into bed. Get 20 minutes of sleep!
  • Wake up. When your alarm goes, get out of bed, open the curtains and walk around. Your hart rate will rise and you will start to get awake. Throw a little bit of water at your face, and be awake.
  • Enjoy. Congratulations, you powernapped! You should feel more alive/awake now! Try to get productive right away.

I love taking powernaps when you are heading towards a problem. And I think powernapping should be something bosses advocate. Let me know what you think of it!This is a post by Stefan Knapen from StudySuccessful.com, a blog about how to study. Thanks for the tips! I really need to start power napping because I’m always crashing near the end of the day after waking up at 7:30 am.

Power napping is great, if you master it, you can feel refreshed after only 30 minutes of napping.

I’m a habitual power napper but didn’t know about the coffee trick. :-) Even though power napping doesn’t make up for lack of sleep, it’s definitely a great shortcut when you’re really short on time.

I have always been jealous of people who can fit in a nap anytime. I simply cannot sleep well in the middle of the day.

Powernaps in the middle of a day are definitely refreshing. I always make sure not to nap for too long though, otherwise I feel drowsy for the rest of the day. But yes, they can improve productivity in my opinion.

That is an interesting tip about drinking coffee just before taking a nap. Most people would worry about that keeping them up, but it makes sense that it takes a while to kick in. Since I’m not a coffee drinker, I wonder if it would also work to have a can of coke or something.

Try green tea also. It has similar effects as coffee but is healthier for you.

I’m trying a little snap from time to time and sometimes it is working, sometimes not. But surely this is good idea for anyone that have some private space and some time to do it.

There are a number of very good tapes and Cd’s meant to take you into trance for a short time, usually the length of the tape. They use classical hypnosis some times with multiple voices, and the results are astounding.

I have to say having a power nap for me, makes me feel 10x worse, I would rather just push myself through the day and get on with it, these little sleeps don’t always turn out the best way. I wish that I could be like others have a short nap and wake up totally refreshed but it never works out that way.

May have been particularly tired last night. You’ve probably had occasion to want to go to bed early, or to have a really long nap. You can’t predict or count on a regular schedule at this point.

Another thing that makes you drowsy is a soft drink (Coke, pepsi, etc.). Although obviously not good for calories, it works for making me somewhat sleepy mid-day and after a nice loud burp, I try to catch a nap. :)

I can’t power nap this way. I would way too hyped on all that caffeine. Minus the caffeine, I might try this. Thanks.

These short 20-minute power naps for people who are really engrossed in their work, almost always provide a fresh burst of new ideas and energy. They tend to eliminate the need for caffeine boosts during the workday

I’ve tried your BTD for the last few days, using it to get up half an hour earlier. In that time, I tidy my bedroom. It’s a very useful idea, and I haven’t been feeling significantly more tired than normal, despite going to bed at the same time.
